Getting prenatal care is important. It reduces the possibility of complications during your pregnancy and protects the baby from low birth weight and other conditions that can be life-threatening.
There is no time in your life quite like the time when you bring a child into the world. It’s a journey you and your baby take together, so just about everything that happens to you is also happening to that new life within you. So keeping you and your baby healthy and safe becomes a very high priority.
If you live in Shawnee County (which includes Topeka and the surrounding communities), you now have access to all of the resources available to help you take care of yourself and your baby through the GraceMed Pregnancy Maintenance Initiative (PMI).
Delivering a full range of support.
The GraceMed PMI Case Manager, a state-licensed social worker, will be with you throughout your pregnancy and up to 6 months after delivery of your child. Maintaining a healthy pregnancy and preparing for the safe delivery of your new baby is our goal. Support available includes the following:
If you or any member of your household is uninsured, we will meet with you to determine your eligibility for state Medicaid / CHIP coverage. If you qualify for coverage, we can help you complete the KanCare application.
We’ll help you get the healthcare you need including on-going prenatal and post-natal care, dental care, vision services, and behavioral health support. We can also provide access to treatment for substance use disorders and mental health conditions.
If you choose adoption, the PMI Case Manager will help you select an agency and provide support to you and your family throughout the adoption process; and up to six months following the adoption.
Quality of Life
We can also refer you to other community resources that provide affordable housing, employment services, and food assistance programs like SNAP and WIC.
Doula & Other Services
We can also help you connect with parenting education classes, learn more about using a Doula or midwife for your delivery and receive assistance from other pregnancy and infant programs in Shawnee County. We also have a limited number of bus passes to help you get to your medical appointments and visits with community resource providers.
All Pregnancy Maintenance Initiative services are provided free of charge.
This program is made possible through grant support from the Kansas Department of Health & Environment (KDHE). For more information about this new program and to meet our PMI Case manager, please click here.
