Essential RoleProvides patient care services to complement the provider’s role of delivering primary health care services at GraceMed Health Clinic, Inc.

Reporting Relationships: The Medical Assistant has a primary obligation to the Corporation as a whole and reports to the Medical Manager.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Clinical

  1. Prepares patients for examination, treatments and procedures.
  2. Obtains vital signs and chief complaints.
  3. Obtains and/or reviews family history.
  4. Chaperones and assists providers during exams and procedures.
  5. Administers P.O. and I.M. injections and medications as ordered (after completion of competency training).
  6. Cleans and sterilizes equipment and instruments.
  7. Maintains and stocks exam rooms.
  8. Performs phlebotomy and CLIA waived lab tests.
  9. Performs direct patient care within the limits of his/her training and capabilities when the provider is unavailable.

Administrative

  1. Documents administration of all injections and medications in medical records.
  2. Records lab results in medical record and notifies patients of their results subsequent to provider reviews.
  3. Records family history in medical records.
  4. Returns or receives patient phone calls during office hours; performs triage of patients by phone or in office, assessing medical needs of patient and coordinating appropriate care or interventions and referring to licensed staff or providers as indicated.
  5. Provides patient education as requested.
  6. Assures proper labeling and handling of all specimens.  Completes appropriate requisitions and/or paperwork.
  7. Maintains a follow-up system for lab results.
  8. Coordinates referrals and schedules appointments with specialists and ancillary services on behalf of patients in the Patient Referral Clerk absence.
  9. Maintains clinical equipment and supplies.
  10. Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
  11. Assists in the development of and documents protocols related to his or her job functions.
  12. Performs other appropriate duties as requested by supervisors.

Performance Requirements:

  1. Courteous, honest and professional at all times.
  2. Ability to communicate and relate well with physicians and other clinical staff.
  3. Can provide innovative input into the development of the office and its processes.
  4. Maintains appropriate certification(s).Efficient, organized and accurate.

Education and Experience:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent required.
  2. Graduate from an accredited program for CMA or one year experience in a Medical Assistant role.

 Qualifications:

  1. Bilingual Spanish preferred.  Very large population of spanish-only speaking patients.
  2. CPR certification required (must be obtained within 30 days of hire).
  3. Understands ethics of confidentiality.
  4. Previous computer experience or training in medical field preferred.
  5. Successful candidate must submit to TB testing and any vaccinations recommended by OSHA Guidelines.

 Working Conditions: Medical office environment.  Multi-task oriented position including direct patient care may require sitting or standing for long periods.  Some bending, stooping, and lifting (up to 50lbs).  Must interact with physicians, patients and other office personnel.  Must possess socio-economic and cultural sensitivity.  May involve contact with angry, upset or ill persons.  Will involve potential exposure to blood and body fluids and other hazardous substances.  Must have visual acuity and manual dexterity to assist with procedures, perform and interpret lab results, and interface with computer.  Must have auditory acuity to handle phone calls and extensive patient interaction.
